Announcing: the State of EUC, VDI and SBC union survey 2017

We’re back!
The industry’s biggest (almost) annual survey has just started again. For a couple of years now one thing is clear: Many discussions in the End User Computing, VDI and SBC space are not just about performance best practices and product comparisons. With so many VDI and SBC deployments out there, the differences are huge. It is only logical to wonder how these real-world VDI and SBC environments are used and how they are built, especially when you consider the rapidly changing VDI/SBC landscape. Since it’s driven as much by innovation as it is by marketing campaigns, there is a clear need to better understand what is out there.

5 Questions to Ask Your VDI Vendor

Commentary by Ruben Spruijt, field CTO at Atlantis Computing
Whether you’re a mid-sized enterprise that’s work-from-home-friendly or a large corporation based largely on remote workers, there will come a time when you’ll want to consider how to optimize your workspace technology for the way your employees work. One solution is virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), a technology that provides a consistent desktop experience across devices and locales. First introduced in the mid-2000s, VDI has expanded the definition of the office to include everything from an Uber ride to a flight.

Windows 10 IOPS for VDI - White Paper

Summary
Windows 10 and IOPS is the most challenging, least understood and most frequently encountered resource bottleneck that stalls todays desktop virtualization projects. Many of these projects are Windows 10 migrations which are one of the key IT initiatives which are driving VDI adoption today. However, many IT organizations planning a Windows 10 migration with VDI are unaware that the combination of Windows 10 and Anti-virus more than doubles the amount of memory and IOPS required per desktop compared to Windows XP and Windows 7, which will significantly decrease virtual desktop density per server and will degrade virtual desktop performance. As a result, the storage architecture is often undersized for Windows 10. This leads to desktop performance, very poor user experience and budgeting issues when more storage is required to fix the IOPS bottleneck and latency challenges.

The Tony Stark of the Modern Workspace

Give your virtual desktops, applications and workstations the performance boost they need. Your business consumers expect nothing less. They are KING in the modern virtual workspace. High performance storage and discrete graphics are being using in every physical PC so why settle for less in the virtual workspace? In order to be successful, we must make the virtual workspace cheaper, simpler and faster with a better user experience than the physical PC experience.  The key to make this happen is to understand the breakthrough and impact of GPUs, Flash, Software-Defined Storage (SDS) and Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) appliances so customers and business consumers can benefit from the Virtual Workspace today. Be the Tony Stark of the modern virtual workspace

Future of VDI Technology with Atlantis and Workspot

Currently, less than 10% of the enterprise workspaces are Virtualized Desktops. While the total number of VDI instances are in the billions, the overall percentage is relatively low. Historically VDI didn't deliver on its promises - it overpromised and under delivered. It was too complex and expensive both CAPEX and OPEX.  The user and admin experience just wasn’t good enough. The days of VDI 1.0 are now over.

The Zen of Atlantis USX on Citrix XenServer: Part I Setup

What is Atlantis USX software defined storage and how does it work on Citrix XenServer? What does the impact of hyper converged on Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp workloads? If I'm using Citrix XenServer for non-VDI workloads, is software defined storage applicable to me? This is Part I in a blog series looking to answer these questions, providing insight into the possibilities of reducing the costs of delivering a virtualised environment while improving the performance

Time to participate in the Project VRC State of the VDI and SBC union 2015 survey

The independent project ‘Virtual Reality Check’ (VRC) (www.projectvrc.com) was started in early 2009 by Ruben Spruijt (@rspruijt) and Jeroen van de Kamp (@thejeroen) focusing on research in the desktop and application virtualization market. Several white papers with Login VSI (www.loginvsi.com) test results were published about the performance and best practices of different hypervisors, Microsoft Office versions, application virtualization solutions, Windows Operating Systems in server hosted desktop solutions and the impact of antivirus.

Best Practice for configuring VMware VMkernel ports for NFS traffic

The importance of VMkernel port groups when presenting NFS data stores is key in getting great performance for NFS traffic. In this article, I’ll be talking specifically about VMware ESX as that’s the hypervisor we see most of you using in production today and why we recommend reducing the hops for vmkernel port  when deploying Atlantis ILIO.

Increasing the Flexibility, Scalability and Performance of Datacenter Storage with Atlantis ILIO USX

Storage here, storage there, storage everywhere. Does this sound familiar? At the pace that servers are being virtualized (74% of servers in 2014), storage capacity requirements are growing at 40% per year and doubling every 2 years. But the need is not for just more storage capacity, it is specifically for more high performance storage with the flexibility required by virtualized datacenters today.

Atlantis ILIO for Persistent VDI – how safe is my data?

Common concerns from those seeing Atlantis ILIO for persistent desktops for the first time is “how quickly do unique changes get saved to the optimised disk?” as well as “could my desktop data get corrupted?“

To address these concerns, it is useful to understand how the Microsoft Windows OS commits data, and then we can discuss how Atlantis ILIO ensures data integrity.

How to use Iometer to Simulate a Desktop Workload

To deliver VDI Performance it is key to understand I/O performance  when creating your VDI architecture. Iometer is treated as the industry standard tool when you want to test load upon a storage subsystem. While there are many tools available, Iometer’s balance between usability and function sets it out.  However, Iometer has its quirks and I’ll attempt to show exactly how you should use Iometer to get the best results, especially when testing for VDI environments. I’ll also show you how to stop people using Iometer to fool you.
