Hyperconvergence: Taking your first step

If you are like most IT leaders, you have heard of hyperconvergence but probably haven’t gotten your feet wet. Per a recent end user survey we conducted, only about 20% of respondents are currently actually using hyperconverged appliances.

However, nearly 70% of you intend to deploy hyperconverged or SDS solutions.

It is understandable that most folks are taking the “wait & watch” approach.  If you have been in the IT infrastructure business for any length of time, you have seen new, upcoming and hot trends that were supposed to change the face of IT, but more often than not, they fell flat. Remember FCoE, or heterogeneous storage device management or gigantic multi-PB storage SAN arrays that were supposed to be data centers in a box. Once the marketing slideware gave space to reality, the solutions evaporated pretty quickly. The data center folks are realists – they nod at the Kool-Aid and then move on. Keeping an infrastructure running 24x7 every single day is brutally difficult and often under-appreciated.

Look before you Leap

What can hyperconverged solution vendors do to ensure that the journey from traditional (and often costly & complex) to the new architecture is painless and risk-free for customers? This is an important pain point that often holds customers back from getting on a journey of 21st century IT transformation.  What can we do to enable customers in taking a small step forward towards hyperconvergence, try it out without burning manpower and a hole in their pockets and still be confident in the resiliency of the solution?

However just as interestingly, if not more, HyperScale CX-4 is a fully resilient solution, capable of maintaining SLAs even in an event of failure both at a physical or logical level, be they drives, nodes or volumes. CX-4 also supports all the data services such as data reduction, dedup-aware snapshots, replication and can be used to build a 3-site disaster recovery solution. It is offered on five platforms (most in the industry) – SuperMicro, HP, Dell, Cisco and Lenovo.

100% Software Option

If your data center already looks like a VMWorld exhibition hall, with hardware from multiple vendors fighting for rack space, then perhaps you shudder at the very thought of adding more hardware, even to try out hyperconvergence. Well, we appreciate that and that’s why we have a purely 100% software solution that lets you try out hyperconvergence – Atlantis USX 2-node solution.
That’s correct – USX used to require a minimum of 3-nodes but now only requires two. And you can use whatever hardware you have to build a simple yet resilient 2-node hyper-converged solution.
The interesting bit is that customers can even mix and match their HyperScale CX-4 hyper-converged appliances with 100% software defined USX storage. The savings of this approach is obvious and immediate. Imagine a ROBO deployment, where you deploy HyperScale CX-4 at each of the ROBO sites and use Atlantis USX to virtualize your existing hardware resources at your central data center. By not forcing you to buy new appliances for your central site, we can help you save around 50% of your total solution cost vs. any other hyper-converged vendor.

Finally, a kicker for the geeks – if you want – you can even build a USX 2-node solution with two nodes that are in two different data centers! In other words, we have enabled a stretched cluster solution with Atlantis USX 2-node!
