The team at Atlantis Computing is very excited today for two reasons, one is the announcement of Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0, the first solution that enables VMware View customers to run persistent virtual desktops In-Memory using RAM as primary storage, making persistent virtual desktops cheaper and faster than physical PCs.

The second one is the announcement from our valued partners VMware and Cisco introducing a new bundled solution configuration, the Cisco UCS SmartPlay with VMware Horizon View.  This is an easy-to-order bundle focused on customers in the mid-market space to dramatically improve the price-to-performance ratio of VDI implementations for customers of all sizes.

Atlantis Computing complements the new SmartPlay bundle with the capability to deliver persistent and stateless desktop with a better user experience than a PC, at a fraction of the cost. In addition deployments are fully automated – from installation to data store creation – and implementation architectures are greatly simplified to enable very large scale deployments on Cisco UCS.

Persistent deployments are preferred by customers as they use their existing desktop images, and current tools and processes for updates and upgrades – without long transformational projects, sacrificing the user experience or breaking the bank buying storage. However until Atlantis ILIO Persistent 4.0, it was not possible to deliver a user experience that was much higher than a PC –  at a lower cost. This is the first time that organizations can deliver virtual desktops immediately to all their employees using the Cisco UCS SmartPlay bundle with VMware Horizon View.

Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI and Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI  leverage UCS RAM and ILIO In-Memory Storage technology to run stateless and persistent desktops using the server RAM as primary storage only. With ILIO Diskless VDI, the deployment does not need any physical storage at all to support the virtual desktops – no SSDs or SSD arrays as RAM is the primary storage;  and with ILIO Persistent VDI a small amount of shared SAN/NAS storage is used – up to 95% less – to maintain a real-time optimized backup and recovery environment while the View desktops run from RAM at very high speed. In addition, because all sessions run on RAM, the amount of storage traffic sent over the network is drastically reduced, addressing a key VDI deployment risk.

Atlantis ILIO leads to simple and scalable deployment architectures, with push-button fully automated deployment, configuration, storage sizing, and datastore creation for thousands of persistent virtual desktops – across multiple racks of servers – to reduce deployment risks and address skill shortages with most IT teams.

This means that Cisco and VMware resellers can offer this bundle, add in the Atlantis ILIO licenses, and present a BOM to their customers without having to go through a complex sizing and quote creation exercise for a given number of users. Delivering an end-to-end VDI solution has never been so easy – a very simple licensing model and best-of-class desktop virtualization hardware and storage and desktop virtualization software!

And even better, customer can get started right away with their existing images and processes!

Most IT organizations (and like Brian Madden blogged today: “VDI really shines with persistent “one-to-one” desktops since that’s the way your current pre-VDI physical desktops work”) would prefer to deploy persistent virtual desktops because that deployment model is the least disruptive to an IT organization. It uses the same desktop images already deployed on PCs, the same existing tools, and the same processes already in place and perfected over the last several years, to maintain and upgrade persistent virtual desktops.

Unlike traditional storage, Atlantis ILIO In-Memory Storage™ technology decouples performance from the traditional limitations of disk-based storage by running all sessions directly on the Cisco UCS server RAM to provide unparalleled performance, including 12 second boot time, near-instant application launches, and improvements to the user experience such as allowing the use of Windows Index and Search Service that deliver desktop and email searches near-instantly.

How can you add Atlantis ILIO Persistent VDI or Diskless VDI to the Cisco UCS SmartPlay Bundle with VMware Horizon View

You can use the VMware View 5.1 Reference Architecture published by GlassHouse, VMware and Atlantis Computing to easily expand the configuration as you grow your Cisco UCS SmartPlay with VMware Horizon View. To take advantage of this reference configuration, for stateless or persistent VDI deployments, you can contact to request more information, set up a personal demo or order the following SKUs:

Cisco has developed an additional SmartPlay bundle for the Cisco UCS-E series that is used to provide up to 30 virtual desktops from a blade that fits into the Cisco ISR router for branch offices to deliver an “Office in a Box solution”. Atlantis ILIO has been certified on that platform as “Cisco Cloud Connector Hosting Compatible” with the Cisco UCS-E series and Cisco ISR router to deliver an exceptional user experience, and decrease the TCO and OPEX significantly by eliminating the need for expensive SSDs.

Customer Success: Colt Wins Best of VMworld Europe with VMware View, Cisco UCS and Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI

Colt Technology Services won the “Best of VMworld 2012” Europe award for its Agilisys Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) project deployed with Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI and Cisco UCS B230 M2 blades. Colt and the VMware professional services organization were able to demonstrate that the diskless VDI implementation delivered amazing desktop performance that scaled linearly with average response times of 0.53 seconds for all common activities such as launching Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, Zip or Internet browsers.

“We were able to run 171 virtual desktops per Cisco blade with Atlantis ILIO software while using only 66% of the CPU. The 61% reduction in total cost of our desktop estate, along with 23% OPEX savings, 40% increase in density and Atlantis ILIO deployment automation, enabled us to deliver a high quality and cost-effective cloud-hosted desktop that we can deploy at scale.”
Brian Keats, Programme Manager, Colt Technology Services.

VMware, Cisco and Atlantis ILIO Reference Architectures

The following Reference Architectures have been published:

  • GlassHouse Technologies, Atlantis Computing and VMware published a Reference Architecture based on VMware View 5.1 and Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI 3.2, to simplify VDI deployments by eliminating storage, enabling customers to deploy storage-less virtual desktops using only server CPU and RAM.

  • A VDI solution and reference architecture leveraging the VMware View solution that eliminates the VDI memory and storage bottlenecks, enabling customers to deploy VDI with better performance and at a lower cost than a physical PC. You can read the detailed white paper and the overall Cisco VXI CVD for more information.

*Actual performance results may vary depending on servers, architectures, networks and storage used
