Notes from the Atlantis CTO Forum

I recently attended the Atlantis CTO Forum that took place in London for some of Atlantis’s top partners in the UK. The focus for the meeting was a technical and commercial update for the technical representatives from a handful of Atlantis partners in the UK. The afternoon covered a number of different aspects from common architectural and implementation pitfalls, tips and importantly for Atlantis, feedback from the field as to how their technology is used, sold and could be improved. Whilst at the event I created a doodle of the topics discovered, these doodles act as a way for me to capture all the information at live events such as this for my future reference so please excuse any spelling mistakes or errors.

Hyperconverged in the VDI and Virtual Workspace space

“Make VDI faster and cheaper than a PC” was THE headline in 2012. This claim won’t happen until customers, partners and IT-professionals transform and step out of their comfort zone. Outside the traditional thinking is where the magic happens and this applies to Desktop Virtualization as well. The key is to understand the breakthrough and impact of Flash, Software-Defined Storage (SDS) and Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) appliances to make VDI faster, deliver an awesome user experience, make life for the Administrator much simpler and finally make VDI cheaper. Let me explain the challenges of VDI, how to solve them and future developments.

Principles for an Agile Data Center

In our last post in this series, we talked about how expectations of the IT organization, it’s applications, and its datacenter infrastructure are much higher today than ever before in the past. Think about it for a minute - software as a service (SaaS) applications running in the public cloud (think Gmail and Dropbox) are agile enough to add new features and functionality, seemingly on the fly and with zero downtime.

The Adoption of Software Defined Storage and Hyperconverged Infrastructure in 2016

IT budgets are shrinking. Demands on IT are increasing. Data center technology has become a quagmire of complexity. Traditional storage has struggled to keep pace with workload demands. With these challenges, CIOs, technical decision makers, and IT staff members are looking for ways to continue meeting critical business needs with solutions that stabilize data center costs while also being simpler to manage. Perhaps the biggest challenges facing the data center today revolve around storage. It’s expensive. It’s complex. And, until flash became more common, it suffered a great deal with regard to performance.

Convergence and the Software-Defined Data Center

In a previous post, we saw a history of data center storage and ended by discussing the fall of the monolithic storage array. In this post, we’ll take a deeper look at the data center trends and architectures that are enabling that transition away from monolithic storage arrays. First, we must step back and look at how we got here.

Achieving the pinnacle of disaster recovery

With Atlantis 3-Site DR Solution

For all the complexities and costs involved, the one thing that traditional big-iron storage got right was their high availability and disaster recovery solutions. Developed over a decade or so, those solutions evolved and pushed the boundaries of DR driven by increasingly complex customer requirements.

Putting a leash on storage expansion

Understanding the real impact of deduplication is critical for any IT professional in the modern datacenter. This is true from both performance and capacity perspectives. Choosing the right storage solution is a long-term commitment. Choose wisely by understanding the impact of a key data service functionality such as  deduplication.

In the past deduplication, or dedupe, was a feature highly priced and only available from a small number of vendors. However, as the IT community began to see the explosion of data created and used by their machines, business consumers and applications, dedupe went from a nice to have feature to a critical data service.

Automating Software Defined Storage with Atlantis USX in a Modern Datacenter

The modern datacenter, a software-defined datacentre (SDDC), is heralded as the best solution to deliver business flexibility and power while reducing costs and increasing performance. As you move towards the goals of SDDC, the provisioning and operation of your infrastructure should be automated as much as possible. Yet, a common questiopn on how to deliver SDDC today is how to transition and implement components such as Software Defined Storage?

What are those Software Defined Storage capabilities, and how can you utilise Atlantis USX to automate the delivery of your new or existing storage services to bring about your modern datacenter today?

“Made for Solid State” SDS Architecture – Key Considerations

My previous blog is generating some interesting questions on why I think Atlantis USX is solid-state optimized vs. others in the SDS/HC category are not.
Hint – it is fundamentally about the architectural approach to treating solid state media in an optimized fashion

Infrastructure Convergence: The Choice is Yours

Modern datacenter infrastructure is set to undergo a transformation as the shift towards cloud computing and massively scalable processing enables more users, applications and workloads to access underlying resources.
The constraints of traditional software and hardware models are being loosened as cloud computing gives individuals and businesses more choice over how to acquire or deliver IT services.  This is prompting many to look at alternatives to the compute, storage and networking technologies they deploy today, leading to growing interest in the concept of infrastructure convergence. But infrastructure convergence covers a multitude of sins so choosing the right version depends on the business need and the use case.

VMware VSAN and Atlantis ILIO USX Join Forces on Software-Defined Storage

As part of the ongoing partnership between VMware and Atlantis Computing, we are excited to announce at VMware Partner Exchange (PEX) a joint solution that integrates the ability of VSAN to pool local solid state drives (SSDs) and hard disks (HDDs) with the Atlantis ILIO USX  software-defined storage solution to extend and optimize VSAN. Using Atlantis ILIO USX, IT organizations can pool VSANs with existing shared SAN, NAS and All-Flash storage, while optimize it with Atlantis ILIO In-Memory Storage technology to boost performance, reduce storage capacity and provide storage services such as high availability, fast cloning and unified management across all datacenter storage hardware.
