A CTO perspective on VMworld 2016: Any Cloud, AnyApp, AnyDevice

VMworld is absolutely the most leading cloud, virtualization and datacenter event of the year.  It took place in Las Vegas August 28 – September 1st. Hot topics for this VMworld: Compute Virtualization, Networking, Storage and End-User-Computing. This VMworld was a packed week with more than 400+ sessions; 23,000 attendees, 100,134 VMs deployed in Hands On Labs and numerous networking opportunities. These are astonishing, and hard to beat, numbers for sure. I want to share my notes, observations and highlights of the first and second general session and some other resources which I collected over the week. Hope you find it valuable!

The Tony Stark of the Modern Workspace

Give your virtual desktops, applications and workstations the performance boost they need. Your business consumers expect nothing less. They are KING in the modern virtual workspace. High performance storage and discrete graphics are being using in every physical PC so why settle for less in the virtual workspace? In order to be successful, we must make the virtual workspace cheaper, simpler and faster with a better user experience than the physical PC experience.  The key to make this happen is to understand the breakthrough and impact of GPUs, Flash, Software-Defined Storage (SDS) and Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) appliances so customers and business consumers can benefit from the Virtual Workspace today. Be the Tony Stark of the modern virtual workspace

Notes from the Atlantis CTO Forum

I recently attended the Atlantis CTO Forum that took place in London for some of Atlantis’s top partners in the UK. The focus for the meeting was a technical and commercial update for the technical representatives from a handful of Atlantis partners in the UK. The afternoon covered a number of different aspects from common architectural and implementation pitfalls, tips and importantly for Atlantis, feedback from the field as to how their technology is used, sold and could be improved. Whilst at the event I created a doodle of the topics discovered, these doodles act as a way for me to capture all the information at live events such as this for my future reference so please excuse any spelling mistakes or errors.

Future of VDI Technology with Atlantis and Workspot

Currently, less than 10% of the enterprise workspaces are Virtualized Desktops. While the total number of VDI instances are in the billions, the overall percentage is relatively low. Historically VDI didn't deliver on its promises - it overpromised and under delivered. It was too complex and expensive both CAPEX and OPEX.  The user and admin experience just wasn’t good enough. The days of VDI 1.0 are now over.

The SDS Landscape

What does and doesn’t qualify as software-defined storage is a topic of discussion amongst many IT professionals. Fortunately, the answers are pretty straight forward. In this article, we’ll look at what is and isn’t really software-defined, and also look at the two primary ways that SDS is enabled from a technology standpoint.

Hyperconverged in the VDI and Virtual Workspace space

“Make VDI faster and cheaper than a PC” was THE headline in 2012. This claim won’t happen until customers, partners and IT-professionals transform and step out of their comfort zone. Outside the traditional thinking is where the magic happens and this applies to Desktop Virtualization as well. The key is to understand the breakthrough and impact of Flash, Software-Defined Storage (SDS) and Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) appliances to make VDI faster, deliver an awesome user experience, make life for the Administrator much simpler and finally make VDI cheaper. Let me explain the challenges of VDI, how to solve them and future developments.

Atlantis as a founding partner in ProjectVRC.Team

At Atlantis, we have been completely focused on driving the cost of storage performance to zero and thus enabling all-flash performance for any application.  When it comes to VDI, I believe more careers have been lost to storage performance (which is understandable as storage costs are typically 60% or greater of the overall project costs).  It is no wonder that Atlantis ILIO was so groundbreaking by completely solving that problem.
What amazes me even more is the marketing FUD and wild claims related to desktop virtualization and the software-defined data center.  You can't do a search on "Software-Defined XXX" on any vendor's website without seeing all of the reasons why they are the leader in that space.

Infrastructure Convergence: The Choice is Yours

Modern datacenter infrastructure is set to undergo a transformation as the shift towards cloud computing and massively scalable processing enables more users, applications and workloads to access underlying resources.
The constraints of traditional software and hardware models are being loosened as cloud computing gives individuals and businesses more choice over how to acquire or deliver IT services.  This is prompting many to look at alternatives to the compute, storage and networking technologies they deploy today, leading to growing interest in the concept of infrastructure convergence. But infrastructure convergence covers a multitude of sins so choosing the right version depends on the business need and the use case.
